The Man Behind One of Phoenix’s Most Trusted Auto Repair Shops
Dave Martin’s story of resilience, family lessons, and a business built to solve the toughest automotive problems.
Phoenix, AZ, September 2026
Every morning before school, ten year old Dave Martin pushed himself down the sidewalk in his wheelchair. Every afternoon, instead of heading home, he pushed himself to his father's full service gas station and auto repair shop in Phoenix and went straight to work, pulling weeds from the planters, picking up cigarette butts, cleaning restrooms, and handling the general upkeep that kept the business presentable. When the work was done, he pushed himself home before dinner, only to do it all again the next day.
Martin was born with spina bifida and has used a wheelchair his entire life. Growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, that diagnosis often came with a defined set of expectations about limitation. In his case, those expectations were largely dismissed at home. His parents raised him the same way they raised his brothers, without adjustment to the standard and without exceptions. If something needed to be done, it was his responsibility to figure out how.
That daily repetition created something more durable than discipline. It established a way of approaching problems that didn't change based on difficulty. If something needed to be done, the only question was how. That mindset is what still runs Martins Auto Repair today, the shop Martin now owns, and it's a big part of why it has become a trusted destination for drivers across Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe dealing with vehicle problems that haven't been resolved elsewhere.
Tough Love and Handwritten Lessons
The expectations at home were just as direct. As Martin took on more responsibility at the shop, his father pushed him hard to meet the standard he believed was required to run the business. When something fell short, the feedback wasn't softened. It often came in the form of handwritten letters, blunt, sometimes harsh, making clear that improvement wasn't optional. What stayed with Martin wasn't just the criticism, but how each letter ended. No matter how tough the message, it was always signed the same way: Love, Dad.
At the time, those letters didn't always land well. Today, he looks back on them with a sense of humor.
"I wish I would have saved them," he says. "I could post those things on social media now and make a million bucks."
Finding a Way, No Matter the Obstacle
That thinking showed up early in other ways too. As a kid, he watched other children riding Big Wheels, pedaling and spinning across the street. When someone pointed out that he wouldn't be able to do the same without the use of his legs, he didn't argue. He studied how it worked, climbed on, folded his legs across the frame, and began turning the front wheel with his hands. Within a short time, he was doing the same spins as everyone else. The conclusion was simple: there was always a way, even if it required a different approach.
That perspective carried directly into his career.
From Service Writer to Shop Owner
Martin eventually moved into service writing and management, where he developed a strong understanding of how customers experience automotive repair. He learned that technical skill alone doesn't define a successful shop. Customers want clarity, accountability, and confidence that their problem is being fully addressed, whether it's a persistent check engine light or a complex diagnostic challenge that has gone unresolved elsewhere.
When he took over the business from his father, that expectation became central to how the shop operates. Vehicles aren't filtered based on convenience or simplicity. If a customer brings in a problem, the responsibility is to see it through.
"We do not quit," Martin says. "If it comes through the door, we are going to figure it out."
The Shop Other Mechanics Call When They're Stuck
That philosophy has shaped the shop's reputation over time. While many auto repair shops in Phoenix focus on standardized services that can be completed quickly and predictably, Martins Auto Repair has carved out a different role in the local market. When a problem proves difficult to diagnose or resolve, it often ends up there. Other shops refer customers. Technicians pass along vehicles they've been unable to fix. The pattern has repeated itself often enough that it's become part of the shop's identity throughout the Phoenix area.
For customers, that approach changes the experience. Instead of being told a problem is outside the scope of the shop, they're met with a different assumption: that the issue has a solution, and that someone is willing to find it. That doesn't mean every repair is immediate, but it does mean the process continues until there's a clear and accurate answer.
That said, Martins Auto Repair isn't only for the hard cases. The shop also handles everyday maintenance services, from oil changes and suspension work to diagnosing more complex mechanical problems.
A Legacy Built on Adaptability
Looking back, Martin doesn't describe his early life as a limitation. What was once viewed by others as a constraint became the foundation for how he thinks, how he works, and how he leads. The need to adapt, persist, and find solutions without excuses shaped a mindset that now defines the business.
In a crowded market for auto repair in Phoenix, Martins Auto Repair has built its reputation on something far more difficult to replicate. It's a place where complex automotive problems are worked through, not worked around, where the expectation isn't whether something can be solved, but how long it will take to get there. What was once seen as a limitation has ultimately become a source of strength, shaping a leader who has built one of the most trusted independent auto repair shops in Phoenix for diagnostics, problem solving, and long term vehicle reliability.
